Atmosphere | “The Vanessa” Strawberry Milkshake
It’s no surprise that Taylor Jenkins Reid is giving me a huge book hangover. Atmosphere is one of those books that makes the world stop, nothing else feels important and all you can think about is the next moment you’ll be able to squeeze a few more pages in. It is amazing to me how flawlessly TJR integrates a totally new (to her writing) subject; full of history, facts and fiction, into an epic love story. In case I wasn’t clear, Atmosphere left me starry eyed and wanting more.
Joan has never understood her place in the world, the only thing that makes sense to her is the stars in the sky. As an astrophysicist and one of the first women selected to join NASA’s space shuttle program, Joan begins to find friendship with her colleagues and maybe even her place until a single moment changes everything.
“Next time, I’m going to order this. And I’m going to call it ‘the Vanessa.”
“Vanessa laughed and turned to Joan. ‘What a legacy to leave behind.”
When Joan and her niece stop for milkshakes with Joan’s friend Vanessa, Vanessa shares how her late dad used to take her out for strawberry milkshakes and they would dip a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in the shake. So of course I couldn’t help myself, I had to make an over-the-top milkshake, complete with a PBJ garnish.
